Gellar Cup History

History of the Gellar Cup

The Gellar Cup has had a Long, Distinguished History.
Little did Jack Gellar know that when he purchased a small troll doll for his young daughter Monica in 1976 that he would begin the storied history of football's holy grail: The Gellar Cup.

The following thanksgiving the unassuming trinket was nailed to a 2x4 and awarded to the winner of the hotly contested Gellar Bowl between Monica and her brother Ross.

Monica won the inaugural Gellar Bowl and took possession of the cup. Monica's success in Gellar Bowls is unparallelled sweeping the first four cups and accumulating eight total victories. Ross' lone victory came in 1981 when Monica forfeited the contest because she refused to leave her heaping helping of stuffing to compete in the game.

Monica was furious about her first (and only) loss and demanded a rematch for the cup; Ross refused. Tired of listening to his children fight, Jack Gellar threw the Gellar Cup into the lake. Monica later retrieved the original cup, but the lake incident ended the offical contesting of the original Gellar Cup.

In 1982 the Gellar Bowl resumed with a new metalic Gellar Cup (the cup which is now competed for in the SSL). The cup took on it's current one-armed appearance when Monica blasted Ross over the head for refusing to acknowledge her 1982 victory.

The Gellar cup was awarded three more times (1983-1985)before being found during a "routine" cleaning by Ross and Monica's mother Judy. Judy threw the metalic cup in the trash effectivelty ending the seven year run of the Gellar Bowl.

The Gellar Cup was not contested between the years of 1986 and 1990, but in 1991 the Gellar Cup returned to glory as the championship trophy of the Lake Basin Football League.

The LBFL maintained possession of the cup for three years (1991-1993) before the league folded after the 1993 season. The cup again went uncontested during the 1994 and 1995 seasons before being restored as the official trophy of the Gellar Bowl in 1996.

The cup was found shortly after the 1996 Gellar bowl by Rachel Green, Monica's roomate at the time, as Rachel searched the apartment for the Christmas gifts Monica had hidden in the apartment. Unaware of it's significance, Rachel took the cup with her to her place of employment. The Gellar Cup was quickly lost and went uncontested once again for the 1997-2000 seasons.

In the year 2000 intermountain west region attorney Benjamin "Ben" Gordita formed the Syssa Stars League. The league had a successful first season capped off by the Waterford Wolverine's victory over the Utah Stixx Boyzz for the first league championship. Gordita, however, was not satisfied with the turnover of franchises over that season. In 2001 he aimed to stabilize the league by allowing the expansion Island Park Landslide and West Jordan Worms to round out the eight team league. With a new league built for the "not so distant future" Gordita sought to acquire a trophy to honor the SSL champion.

Rex Prescott, Co-Chair of the SSL competition committee found the perfect trophy in October of 2001. With approval from the league office, Rex acquired the the illustrious Gellar Cup, and, follwoing approval of SSL owners, the historic cup was named the official trophy of the Syssa Stars League.

At the end of the 2001 season the Idaho Desert Demons became the first SSL team to claim the Gellar Cup linking them throughout history with the likes of Monica Gellar and the Dale Ruffriders.

The Gellar Cup has many more chapters to be written in it's history so watch history unfold in the Syssa Stars League.

The following article is reprinted with permission from the 10/29/01 evening edition of the West Jordan World:

The Geller Cup the much sought after trophy of the Syssa Stars League made its public debut at the Utah Stixx Boyzz versus the Wisconsin Whippin Wizards game on October 28th.
When shown to the crowd shouts of "oohs" and "aahs" could be heard. One stunned observer was quoted as saying "The cup even looks like it is made out of metal"
The Geller Cup, named after famed football players Monica and Ross Geller, will go annually to the Champion of the Syssa Stars League. It is a pure imitaion gold cup placed atop a solid wood base and stands a magnificent 51/2 inches tall.
Syssa Stars League Competition Committee Co-Chair, Rex Prescott, approved the purchase of the cup after an exhaustive search of local thrift shops. "I was looking at the West Jordan Deseret Industries when I saw it standing there and decided to splurge and spend the $.50 cents on it."
The rest of the Western Conference Owners gave the final vote of approval at their recently concluded owners meeting before it was displayed to the public at the game the next day.
